I should explain what Scarlet Pippin is - it's the name is a type of old-fashioned almost forgotten apple. I got very excited when I found them listed by Bernwood Fruit Trees, a farm dedicated to collecting, conserving and growing traditional varieties of apples, pears and cherries (among others). Traditional varieties often don't travel, store or last well, so are rarely stocked by large supermarkets and as orchards are felled and fewer people grown their own food, they're simply lost. But they're a part of the local history of a place, important for genetic diversity and often have unexpected and interesting shapes and tastes, so there is much to be excited about.
